Rock Me
Hello Possums,
I was terribly depressed this week after reading the Rock Hudon bio by Sara Davidson. It was interesting to read and fascinating as all hell, but I felt heart-broken that he was so tormented about his sexuality, refusing to fight AIDS because as he told his lover, "I had sex and now I'm gonna die."
I still love Rock and although I am a Netflix junkie, I get peeved at how long it takes to get my movies. So I went over to the best little video store in town, Eddie Brandt's Saturday Matinee and rented 'Lover Come Back' (not as good as Pillow Talk as far as I'm concerned) and 'Seconds' which I had never seen before and which is absolutely, astonishingly brilliant.
It was interesting to read Davidson's account of the filming of this great thriller. For the drunk scene, Rock wasn't sure how to play it and director John Frankenheimer gave him permission to play it drunk - which he did for three whole days. If I hadn't known he was really drunk off camera, I would have said it was an incredible performance. It still is, because it is real and very emotional. The movie is truly disturbing. Right up there for me in terms of my favorite movies along with the original 'Manchurian Candidate' and 'The Parallax View.'
I now have two DVDs of old eps. of 'MacMillan and Wife' to watch. I write for two hours, reward myself with an ep of 'Macmillan and Wife' then hit the 'puter again.
Rock was the man...wonder what he would make of the world he left behind? Would he think we've all gone mad?
